What if your imagination could change the world?

This summer, it just might.

Beloved author Katherine Applegate is partnering with the Collaborative Summer Library Program and Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group to launch the Color Our World Writing Contest, a nationwide opportunity for kids ages 8 to 12 to pick up their pencils, power up their keyboards and let their creativity shine.

Applegate, a Newbery Medalist and No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of The One and Only Ivan, Wishtree, Odder, Crenshaw and Willodeen, is the 2025 Summer Reading Champion. Known for writing heartfelt stories that spark empathy and wonder, she is inviting young storytellers to join her in using words to make a difference.

“Books change the world. And so can you,” Applegate said.

The Challenge

From June 1 to July 31, 2025, young writers are invited to submit a short story between 1,000 and 1,500 words based on one prompt:
Write about a character who takes an action, big or small, that changes someone else’s day for the better.

Stories must include a title, a main character who takes action and a clear beginning, middle and end. Creativity is encouraged, and there are no limits to what kind of world kids can imagine.

The Prizes

The grand prize winner will receive:

  • A virtual writing workshop with Applegate
  • Signed copies of Wishtree, Crenshaw, Willodeen and Odder
  • $500 worth of books for readers ages 8 to 12, donated to a library or school of the winner’s choice

Three runners-up will each receive signed copies of Applegate’s featured books.

Entries will be judged by the Collaborative Summer Library Program, Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group and Applegate.

Story Inspiration

Young writers can find inspiration in Applegate’s beloved books:

In Wishtree, a wise oak tree and a loyal crow show a neighborhood the power of kindness.

Willodeen follows a brave girl who stands up for nature’s most misunderstood creatures.

Odder tells the story of a daring sea otter who finds her strength after a close encounter with a great white shark.

Crenshaw explores friendship and resilience through a boy and his larger-than-life imaginary cat.

Each story encourages young readers to see the world with more empathy, compassion and courage.

Entries open at 12 a.m. ET on June 1, 2025. No purchase is necessary to enter. The contest is open to legal U.S. residents age 18 or older entering on behalf of an eligible child. For official rules and entry details, visit the website.
