Summer Adventure Program

‘Imagine Your Story’ 2020

Fairy Tales. Fables. Folklore. Travel to the land of make believe and kingdoms far, far away, as tales come alive through this year’s Summer Adventure Program, “Imagine Your Story.”

Summer Adventure Program will kick off June 15 and will run through August 24 in an entirely virtual format. Every other week, participants of all ages will receive an at-home challenge paired with library resources and programs that encourage reading and adventures.

By completing a challenge you will be entered into a prize drawing for that specific challenge. Submissions for any challenge will enter your name once in the grand prize drawing for your age group.

Little Ones
Challenge 1: Once Upon a Time

Read the story of The Three Little Pigs or a story that is adapted from The Three Little Pigs. Afterwards, build three houses for the little pigs: one out of bricks, one out of straw, and one out of sticks. The bricks, straw, and sticks can be whatever material you would like: Legos, Play-Doh, etc. Get creative! Take a picture of the houses you created or a picture of you blowing down the houses. Submit the photo(s) by noon on June 25 for a chance to win a My First Castle Panic Board Game.

Bonus: All challenge submissions will give you an entry in the grand prize drawing for a Cardboard Castle or Castle Blocks.

Challenge 2: As Our Story Unfolds

Read one of your favorite books this week. Afterwards, recreate the book cover using whatever you can find! Get creative — use clothing, magazines, newspapers, or whatever you have around the house that might help you recreate the book cover — and take a picture. Submit the photo(s) by noon on July 9 for a chance to win a Sand Castle Building Set.

Bonus: All challenge submissions will give you an entry in the grand prize drawing for a Cardboard Castle or Castle Blocks.

Challenge 3: In the Deep, Dark Woods

Read the story of Little Red Riding Hood or a book adapted from the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Afterwards, gather items together for a picnic like in Little Red’s basket. You can have your picnic on a hike or maybe in your backyard. For your submission, take a picture of your picnic by noon on July 23 for a chance to win a Dragon Stuffed Animal.

Bonus: All challenge submissions will give you an entry in the grand prize drawing for a Cardboard Castle or Castle Blocks.

Challenge 4: Not Too Little, Not Too Big, Just Right

Read the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears or a book adapted from Goldilocks. Afterwards, take a picture of items around your house that are three different sizes: big, little, and “just right.” For your submission, send us a picture of all three items (big, little, just right) by noon on August 6 for a chance to win Fairy Tale finger puppets.

Bonus: All challenge submissions will give you an entry in the grand prize drawing for a Cardboard Castle or Castle Blocks.

Children
Challenge 1: Once Upon a Time

Read a book that takes place in a time long ago. Where is the book set? What does it look and feel like? Using the setting from the book as inspiration, recreate it using whatever materials you would like, i.e., paint, markers, magazines, Play-Doh, tissue paper, naturally found items, or whatever piques your creativity. Submit a photo of your creation by noon on June 25 for a chance to win a Grow n’ Glow Terrarium Kit.

Bonus: All challenge submissions will give you an entry in the grand prize drawing for tickets to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and a Slime and Putty Kit, or tickets to the Gardens on Spring Creek and a Slime and Putty Kit.

Challenge 2: As Our Story Unfolds

Read any book you would like this week. Afterwards, recreate the book cover using whatever you can find! Get creative — use clothing, magazines, newspapers, or whatever you have around the house that might help you recreate the book cover. Did you read a book that had a boring cover? Redesign the cover and snap a pic as your submission for this challenge. Submit the photo(s) by noon on July 9 for a chance to win a Mega Gemstone Grow Kit.

Bonus: All challenge submissions will give you an entry in the grand prize drawing for tickets to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and a Slime and Putty Kit, or tickets to the The Gardens on Spring Creek in Fort Collins and a Slime and Putty Kit.

Challenge 3: In the Deep, Dark Woods

Read a story that includes an adventure that takes place outside. Imagine you are spending the night in that place and must make a tent out of what you see around you. Using what you have at home, create the tent or fort that you imagined. Send us a picture of you reading your book in your fort or tent by noon on July 23 for a chance to win a Monopoly Unicorns vs. Llamas game.

Bonus: All challenge submissions will give you an entry in the grand prize drawing for tickets to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and a Slime and Putty Kit, or tickets to the The Gardens on Spring Creek in Fort Collins and a Slime and Putty Kit.

Challenge 4: Not Too Little, Not Too Big, Just Right

Have you ever wondered what a meal from a story you have read tastes like? Think of Turkish Delight from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe or treacle tart from Harry Potter! Can’t you just taste these dishes as they are being described?! Read a book that describes a dish or meal. Find a recipe for the dish or meal and get cooking (if a recipe doesn’t exist, we challenge you to come up with one on your own!). Send us a picture of your creation by noon on August 6 for a chance to win a Kids Teepee Tent.

Bonus: All challenge submissions will give you an entry in the grand prize drawing for tickets to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and a Slime and Putty Kit, or tickets to the The Gardens on Spring Creek in Fort Collins and a Slime and Putty Kit.

Teens
Challenge 1: Once Upon a Time

For our very first teen challenge, we’d like you to try your hand at creating a book bento. A book bento is a picture of a book, coupled with items that are inspired by themes in the book. For instance, if you created a book bento for Alice Through the Looking Glass, you might include a deck of cards, a mug of tea, and a pocket watch. Or for The Hate U Give, you could include a basketball, sneakers, and a hair brush. Submit a photo of your creation by noon on June 25 for a chance to win a Spokes Bike Shop gift certificate, and a Human Bean free drink coupon and a book.

Bonus: All challenge submissions will give you an entry in the grand prize drawing for an Amazon gift card and a Human Bean free drink card, or a camera tripod and a Human Bean free drink card.

Challenge 2: As Our Story Unfolds

Show us what you’re reading! We’d love to see your face and find out what book, magazine, graphic novel, comic, manga, audiobook (you get the idea — the sky’s the limit!) is keeping you busy and entertained this summer. Take a selfie with the item you are currently reading. If you’d rather not be in the picture, that’s okay! Just snap a picture of the item. Submit the photo(s) by noon on July 9 for a chance to win an AEI Studio and Gifts gift certificate, and a Human Bean free drink coupon and a book.

Bonus: All challenge submissions will give you an entry in the grand prize drawing for an Amazon gift card and a Human Bean free drink card, or a camera tripod and a Human Bean free drink card.

“Old too soon, smart too late.”
“I’ve made all the best mistakes.”
“Living heart for sale. Like new.”
“Former doc now wears art smock.”

Send us a picture of your poem by noon on August 6 for a chance to win a Toast Coffee and Wine gift certificate and a Human Bean free drink coupon and a book.

Bonus: All challenge submissions will give you an entry in the grand prize drawing for an Amazon gift card and a Human Bean free drink card, or a camera tripod and a Human Bean free drink card.

What about the strawberries and cream that Jo March prepares for her family in Little Women or deviled eggs from The Secret Life of Bees? For Challenge #4, we’d like you to read a book that describes a dish or meal.
